Disney CEO Bob Iger said that subscribers will soon have to pay charges for sharing the password of a Disney Plus account with a non-subscriber. He confirmed during the Q3 2024 earnings call that they would be starting “in earnest” this September.
Earlier in February, they started implementing paid sharing and notified some Disney Plus users about this. It was rolled out in some countries in June, but the release in the US wasn’t confirmed at that time.
Disney follows a similar strategy to Netflix, which blocks households without main accounts. However, Netflix allows users to create new accounts or add new subscribers using an add-on costing $7.99/month.
Since Disney Plus expects a higher margin business this year, we can expect a hike in their subscription plans shortly. Furthermore, the company also confirmed that it will add ABC News Live and curated playlists.
Disney Plus will become more expensive by making an ad-free plan to $15.99 on October 17, 2024. This is actually double the cost of what it had in 2019.
